Course Format: Single Training Video (10 minutes, 46 seconds) + 15-Question Quiz

In this eye-opening training presented by aquatic safety expert Dr. Tom Griffiths, learners will discover why victims on the bottom of a swimming pool can become nearly invisible… even in crystal-clear water. Through real-world demonstrations and extensive aquatic safety research conducted at Penn State University, this course reveals how surface agitation, reflection, refraction, glare, and other visual distortions can prevent lifeguards from detecting submerged victims.

Drawing from hundreds of hours of filming in both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities, Dr. Griffiths demonstrates the phenomenon of Physical Body Blindness and explains why traditional assumptions about underwater visibility can lead to delayed recognition and response.

Participants will learn:

  • Why lifeguards should prioritize scanning the bottom before scanning the surface
  • How waves, wind, splashing, and glare distort visibility
  • The impact of reflection and refraction on victim detection
  • The importance of polarized lenses for aquatic surveillance
  • The dangers of Shallow Water Blackout (SWB)
  • Why the principle “When in Doubt, Fish It Out” can save lives

This course consists of a single 10-minute, 46-second training video followed by a 15-question assessment. Participants who successfully achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the quiz will earn a Certificate of Completion.

Recommended For: Lifeguards, aquatic supervisors, pool managers, swim instructors, aquatic facility operators, water safety professionals, and parents interested in aquatic safety.
