Course Format: Single Training Video (10 minutes, 29 seconds) + 15-Question Quiz
In this practical aquatic safety training presented by renowned water safety expert Dr. Tom Griffiths, learners will discover a simple yet highly effective technique for improving lifeguard vigilance, concentration, and accountability. Based on years of research conducted at Penn State University, the Five-Minute Scanning Strategy provides lifeguards with a structured system for reducing boredom, combating fatigue, and maintaining a high level of surveillance effectiveness throughout their shift.
Dr. Griffiths explains why prolonged visual tasks lead to decreased performance and demonstrates how strategic changes in posture, position, and scanning patterns can significantly improve attention and victim recognition. Participants will learn how to apply the Four Ps of the Five-Minute Scan and how this technique can help prevent accidents before they occur.
Participants will learn:
- The purpose and benefits of the Five-Minute Scanning Strategy
- Why visual performance decreases during prolonged observation tasks
- The difference between a scan and a sweep
- How movement helps reduce boredom and improve vigilance
- The Four Ps of the Five-Minute Scan: Posture, Position, Pattern, and Patron Count
- Why lifeguards should change their observation approach every five minutes
- How to develop effective scanning patterns for different aquatic environments
- The importance of moving the head as well as the eyes while scanning
- Why the bottom of the pool should be prioritized during surveillance
- How patron counts improve accountability and awareness within a zone
- The advantages and disadvantages of different lifeguard station designs
- How posture changes, foot patrols, and movement improve concentration and response readiness
This course consists of a single 10-minute, 20-second training video followed by a 15-question assessment. Participants who successfully achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the quiz will earn a Certificate of Completion.
